Strengthen Alabama Homes

grant$10,000

Strengthen Alabama Homes program provides grants up to $10,000 to owners of existing homes to upgrade them to the FORTIFIED standard. No income limits or tests. Open to all homeowners with a primary residence in Alabama.

Program details:

  • Grants will pay 100% of the cost of mitigation up to $10,000
  • The grant award amount MAY NOT cover the entire cost of the work needed
  • Work completed must meet the FORTIFIED™ Roof
  • Homeowners must pay a fee for the FORTIFIED™ Evaluation
  • The grant award amount will not be visible until all three bids are received

FORTIFIED Discounts

qualify for insurance discounts by installing a FORTIFIED Roof or building a FORTIFIED Home™.

Savings range from 20% to 55% off the wind portion of the property owner's insurance. Available for coastal and inland homeowners.

Retrofit Tax Deduction

tax credit$3,000 or 50% of cost of work

Alabama provides homeowners a tax credit when the mitigate the effects of wind or flood damage on their home or business.

Homeowners can deduce up to $3,000 or 50% of the cost of the work involved, whichever is less, for State taxation purposes. Fortified roofs qualify.

Catastrophe Savings Account

Alabama residents who make deposits into accounts labeled as catastrophe savings can reduce their taxable income.

$2,000 if the insurance deductible is equal to or less than $1,000. If the deductible is greater than $1,000, then the amount of the deduction is the lesser of $15,000 or twice the amount of the insurance deductible. If the taxpayer is self-insured and chooses not to obtain insurance, then the deduction is the lesser of $250,000 or the value of the taxpayer’s legal residence.

HUD Mortgage Insurance for Disaster Victims

This is a loan program for renters or homeowners who are located in an area designated by the President as a disaster area, and were destroyed or damaged to such an extent that reconstruction or replacement is necessary.

These loans may be used to finance the purchase or reconstruction of a single-family home that will be the homeowner's principal residence.
